ala Ironwood Band Uniform Policy
These uniforms belong to the school district and most pieces of the uniform are used over by different students each year.
You will be fitted for a uniform at band camp and during the first few weeks of school. Your uniform will be labeled with your name and the piece numbers (jacket / bibbers-pants) assigned to you. You are responsible for these items for the remainder of the school year!
You may not take your uniform home, unless directed to do so by Mr. Broccolo or Mrs. Olmstead
You may not eat or drink (anything but water) while in uniform.
If anything happens to your uniform (a loose button/snap, a spill/stain, etc.), you must let Mr. Broccolo know immediately.
If you grow out of any part of your uniform during the school year, please let Mr. Broccolo know immediately.
Students will hang their jacket/bibbers up on the appropriate hangers following each wear. They may be stored in a uniform bag if the band is traveling, otherwise they will be re-hung on the uniform racks.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
No jewelry
No perfume / cologne / body sprays; these items can damage the uniform fabric. Use extra deodorant and wet wipes as needed.
No nail polish
Hair must not be touching the collar of your uniform (male/female). If you have long hair, put it in one ponytail on top of your head and tuck it into your shako(hat) or beret.
Wear lightweight gym shorts and a Marching Band shirt under the uniform. Heavier clothing will cause your uniform to bunch; you will be hot and uncomfortable.
SHAKOS (hats) / PLUMES / BERETS:
If you are assigned a Shako, it will be labeled with your name and will be yours to wear for the rest of the year.
Shakos will be stored in the band room, they will not be taken home.
If cleaning is needed, please notify Mr. Broccolo immediately. If your shako got into a muddy brawl without you knowing, use a bit of dish detergent on a damp rag to blot the stain away.
Plumes will be handed out at the direction of Mr. Broccolo and collected following each performance. Plumes will never go home with the student.
Berets are wool and are not to be washed.
DINKLES (shoes):
Shoes are ordered at band camp and purchased by the student.
Use a wet wipe / damp cloth to remove any dirt before each performance.
Place newspaper inside of the shoes after each performance – this will soak up excess moisture and odors.
Shoes are to be stored in boxes labeled with the students’ names. Storage will be in the equipment room.
SOCKS:
Long Solid BLACK socks only.
Must be calf length or longer (no anklets!).
Cotton is best for moisture and you may choose thicker socks depending on the fit of your shoes.
Please take your socks home and wash them between performances; they smell bad when left in your garment bag!
GLOVES:
Gloves are ordered at band camp and purchased by the student.
Worn for all performances or at the direction of Mr. Broccolo.
May be taken home to be washed as needed.
Woodwinds cut at the first knuckle of the glove to avoid the glove in a padded area on the instrument.
UNIFORM CLEANING:
Uniforms are cleaned twice each season: The first cleaning will be following alterations at the beginning of the season (paid for with band or booster funds).
The second cleaning may be done as the first cleaning in a group (paid with band or booster funds), or the student will be asked to clean the uniform.
